Coaching in the second sector
A New Context and Approach to Management
An increasing number of people now work in “the second sector”. This is the sector that comprises organizations, groups and individuals who are neither employed by the state (at national or local level – the first sector) or work for industry, commercial or professional enterprises (the third sector). The sector contains many organizations that operate at a local or community level, as well as several who are major national institutions.

This sector demonstrates a remarkable diversity of talents. The organizations, groups and individuals who operate within it include people who work on a full time, part time or occasional basis, with many also working on a voluntary basis. These people also represent an extended age range and great diversity in background, gender, ethnicity, faith, and the inclusion of many who are disabled or otherwise disadvantaged. It is a sector in which contribution to society is highly valued.

People serving in this sector often face issues of regulation, governance, and compliance, as they seek to obtain and work within complex funding streams. Some face complex stakeholder demands based upon their establishment as trusts, or through their dependence on donors, their volunteers, and a requirement that they meet charitable or other purposes. For many they have to lead ‘without authority’ as they are dependant upon conforming to the controls imposed by those working in the first sector. Many also have to manage people who are committed to the organizational aims but are not necessarily familiar with organizational disciplines or skilled in managerial tasks.

A further complication in working in the second sector is the increasing demand for such organizations, groups or individuals to work in partnerships at national, local or community levels.

Our Protean Inquiry Network (PIN) specifically focuses on supporting people who work in local and community partnerships and as may be seen on the PIN website (www.the-pin.co.uk) the approaches we have developed for supporting such working include coaching.
